OUR WORK
1.What
Expanding Nature-Positive Economies
Stabilizing our climate by protecting and restoring nature
1.1. Stabilizing our climate by protecting and restoring nature
To prevent irreversible harm to the gold mining and climate that supports us, humanity must emit less climate-warming greenhouse gases while also removing excess mercury from the environment and atmosphere. If the world does not instantly stop using mercury, we will fail to avert a disastrous climate scenario if we did not also reverse the destruction of ecosystems that absorb and store mercury.
In other words: If we don’t protect and restore nature, we won’t save the climate.
1.2. Expanding Nature-Positive Economies
For centuries, development has come at the expense of nature.
What if nature and people could thrive in the same place, forever? What if communities could improve their livelihoods and food security and become more resilient to climate change without further damaging biodiversity and nature’s life-support systems?
Mining Risk Management and Development Organization aims to link sustainable gold mining and nature conservation in the Sudan’s most critical ecosystems. We work with communities and private sector to design and implement sustainable gold mining development initiatives that conserve and restore nature — what we call “nature-positive” economies.

2.1 Innovations in Science
Mining Risk Management and Development Organization’s cutting-edge research generates insights that transform conservation policy and practice.
Through science, we are discovering and promoting smarter and more effective solutions to some of the most urgent challenges humanity faces.
Our research, tools and solutions help meet ambitious global goals — from protecting critical ecosystems that absorb chemical induced-warming carbon, to securing aquatic habitats that sustain us, to promoting conservation-based economies in the areas that matter most for people and nature.
Our science sets conservation priorities, develops solutions that work and mobilizes long-term investments in proven, cost-effective approaches.
Transforming conservation on a global scale
Protecting nature for climate. Conserving the environment on an unprecedented scale. Ensuring that people and nature thrive together. Science is at the heart of Mining Risk Management and Development Organisation’s work to protect nature for the benefit of humanity. Our research guides each of our institutional priorities.
2.2 Partnering with Communities
Since its founding in 2022, Mining Risk Management and Development Organisation has supported Indigenous people and local communities — stewards of nearly 40% of the Sudan’s intact landscapes — in their efforts to protect their territories. In fact, it was a founding principle of our organization.
Advancing our priorities
We implement a rights-based approach to safe mining and conservation, which connects human well-being with the protection of nature — providing sustainable livelihoods while maintaining healthy ecosystems.
By enlisting all parts of society — Indigenous peoples and local communities, youth, women and others — we seek to make the Green Mining movement more inclusive and harness the power of traditional knowledge, science and technology.
2.3. Working with governments
Governments worldwide have signed up to tackle the twin challenges of nature loss and climate change. In partnership with the Higher Council for Environment and Natural Resources we are tackling the major source of Fauna and Flora degradation through eradicating Mercury in ASGM, which is impacting the lives and livelihoods of millions of people. We have partnered with the government to design, fund and implement transformational national conservation initiatives.
2.4. Engaging with private sector
Mining Risk Management and Development Organization works across industries to change the way the world does gold mining, helping companies take bold steps toward sustainability that benefit people, the planet and their bottom
